With data for 2017 private researchers are classified into business enterprise sector, while non-profit institutions services households into private non-profit sector.

Head count

Total number of R&D personnel, expressed in headcounts, from 2017 onwards includes both internal and external R&D personnel (before only internal).
Some totals do not add up due to rounding. Due to methodological changes (including statistical data protection) made in the R&D survey for 2017, which had a substantial impact on the values of some data, data at a more detailed level are published in new separate tables as some data for 2017 are not fully comparable with the data for the previous years. The time series of data on research and development activity for the 2007–2016 period is available among the archive data. Linked content:
