SEVERE MATERIAL DEPRIVATION RATE is the percentage of persons having living conditions severely constrained by a lack of financial resources, irrespective of persons’ preference with respect to these items. They experience at least four out of nine following deprivations items: cannot afford 1) to pay rent or mortgage, utility bills, loan payments, 2) to keep home adequately warm, 3) to face unexpected expenses, 4) to eat meat, fish or a protein equivalent every second day, 5) a week holiday away from home, 6) a car, 7) a washing machine, 8) a colour TV, or 9) a telephone. The deprivation items are the same as in the indicator 'material deprivation rate'.

YEAR

Income, poverty and social exclusion indicators are published for the SILC (Statistics on Income and Living Conditions) survey year. The data on income for calculating these indicators are from a year earlier, i.e. the year before the survey is conducted.
